Blood oranges are back. And what a crop! The trees are loaded with bright golden globes. Taroccos variety is first to harvest, followed by Moros, and finally Sanguinelli. Blood oranges are the most widely planted citrus Italy (so they must be good, right?!) The color is irresistible in
salads or fruit compotes. Chef Becky makes a
spectacular upside cake with them and of course her very popular blood orange -strawberry marmalade, coming soon.
Chefs love' em. Chez Panisse, Quince, Cotogna...They all order them in advance to be picked up at the ever busy Ferry Building Farmers Market Saturday.
Blood oranges are not just delicious and beautiful! They're also healthy! They are the highest in vitamin C content of any orange variety in the world, and are also high in potassium and dietary fiber. That dark
burgundy color also means high anti-oxidant value.
Sweet, juicy, easy-to-peel and seedless, too. What's not to love?!
